Malaysian MARIE CLAIRE recently published reporter Peter Hossli's story (along with my pictures) about a tent camp for the homeless in Ontario, California, 30 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Residents of the Camp call it "Camp Hope". See more images here

'Camp Hope' in Perpignan

My images of 'Camp Hope' will be shown during the evening screenings at the annual photo journalism festival Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignan/France ('professional week' Sept. 1. - 7. 2008)
The story (produced for the Swiss magazine SonntagsBlick - Text by Peter Hossli) is about a tent city that sprung up near Los Angeles and was built by a new wave of homeless people who lost their homes during the housing crisis in the US. For more photos of 'Camp Hope' click here

Cafe Jack in LA's Koreatown

Jack Shin took his love for the movie Titanic to a different level; he built a replica of the ship in a parking lot on Western Avenue and opened his coffee shop Cafe Jack in it. I saw the story in the Los Angeles Times while visiting California and went to go see it immediately, I love this kind of stuff, without daring people like him the world could be a boring place. Inside there are at least five different comfortable dining rooms, one of which is decorated with movie stills of DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
















Come at night and in some rooms you feel like inside a Christmas tree. I wanted to photograph patrons of the restaurant, but Jack, who claims to have seen the Titanic over one hundred times, said 'we Koreans are kind of shy'...

Traveling Rings

It is difficult to describe the acrobatic movements of this fun loving 'crew' at Santa Monica's beach in a still photo. I had ever seen anything like it and no wonder, this kind of equipment only exists twice, here and in Riverside Park, New York City. As far as I know, the city of Los Angeles built this one here and some very talented people turned it into an incredible sports machinery, where the 'acrobat' swings from one ring to the next while performing twists and turns that hurt your arms just by watching.

Stilt Circus

I met Starchild of the Los Angeles based Stilt Circus on MySpace way before I came to Los Angeles a week ago. Our common interest, theirs stilt walking, mine photographing stilt walkers (see Moko Jumbies), brought us together online. We met again today - this time in person - at Venice Beach for a shoot in full gear. Here a circus does not turn many heads. Venice Beach is circus. Wonderful.
