Amato Opera

The Amato Opera with its 107 seats is the world's smallest opera house and a gem that even some New Yorkers have never heard about. It is situated on the Bowery - two doors up from the now vanished rock club CBGB and near the New Museum of Contemporary Art - an area on the Lower East Side where modernization and the building of luxurious condominiums and stores threatens the old way of life.































Founder and director Anthony Amato (87, above during rehearsal) refuses to sell his house, which has accommodated the opera for the past 60 years, to developers.

Another Fun Day With 'Amphibian Productions'

I had another fun day with members of Amphibian Productions, a theatre production company from Fort Worth, Texas. We shot images for their upcoming “Miss Witherspoon” (by Christopher Durang, pictured is Lindy Benton-Muller (portraying Veronica). Last time we met (click here) the temperatures were well below the freezing point...but you would not know, these actors seem to have fun in front of a camera whatever the temperature.

Carman Lacivita

All he really wanted was a few simple headshots. When actor Carman Lacivita asked me to photograph him he knew that I rather shoot more 'vivid stuff', but we got them done even though we needed a second session due to a blinding bright day on a silver painted rooftop...not too great for portraits with eyes open. But we added some 'playtime' after the first shoot and I like the results (his jeans got badly ripped in the process...)
Carman is also the Artistic Associate and Fight Choreographer for the Fort worth/Texas based theater company Amphibian Production . You will have to ask him for the headshots.

Amphibian Productions

In order to motivate a group of people to pose for images on a windy New York rooftop at below freezing temperatures and keep them there for more than 3 mintues... a photographer better comes up with some good ideas. In this case, the members of Amphibian Productions, a theatre production company from Fort Worth, Texas, and front woman Kathleen Anderson Culebro (above) needed very few clues to have fun with the shoot. I just love working with people from the movie and/or theatre business because they usually love having their pictures taken.













































We all pretty much had no idea about what we were doing because our brains froze quickly, but the energy was great, standing still was no option, even though Rafael Esquer (below), the graphic designer for the company, did just that, but not for long. After an hour or so, we were done and one of the images made the cover of ...
