The Urge To Take Pictures

After three days at home and mostly in bed with a bad cold I felt the urge to just take some pictures tonight. Trigger happy, so to speak. I lasted only 20 minutes ...

Night Vision 2009

I am happily back in New York and after a two day rest I decided to continue a series called Night Vision which I started in 2006. Last night I went to the very fashionable area around 10th avenue and 14th street, the heart of the Meatpacking District.

Coney Island

Since it was 20 degrees celsius last night (remind you, it is Nov 30.!!), I ventured out to Coney Island to continue my night-time-image-search. It was quiet successful, I must say. I spent a long time on the famous boardwalk, with only the occasional jogger passing by. Very peaceful, very pleasant.
















The skeleton of a former 277-foot Parachute Jump tower, which was closed in 1965, came back to life this July when a light show was installed. It now switches its colours quickly from dark blue to pink to dark, and all over again, all night. I absolutely love it.
















Needless to say that the Wonder Wheel is closed for the winter and visitors like me have to watch it from a distance, the gates are locked.

Nightvision

I will continue my nightly searches for images in New York this winter. I am trying to create some kind of moody pictures, mostly without showing any people, because I am a people photographer and I have to try something new once in a while.

Williamsburg

I moved from Red Hook to Williamsburg in Brooklyn a few days ago and started to photograph the neighborhood at night (the camera was set at ASA 3200 and hendheld at 1/5 sec - 1/10 sec at f 5.6).













































The neighborhood will not look like this for long, for this part of Brooklyn is being developed at a neckbreaking speed.













































I bet the waterfront will have a skyline like Manahattan does, not too many years from now. But I sure love living here right now, it is my favorite neighborhood in Brooklyn, next to Greenpoint, where I have also lived a while ago.













































Crossing the Mc Carren Park from Williamsburg towards Greenpoint one can see new luxury condominium buildings grow like asparagus. Is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson going to save us??

Chelsea in BOOKLET Nr. 4

My Nikon D2X was set at HI-2 (3200 ASA) for this entire story about the neighborhood of Chelsea in Manhattan at night, with its more than 400 art galleries. The camera was usually hand held at a shutter speed of 1/5 sec at f5.6. The story was produced for BOOKLET Magazin fuer Fotografie, a magazine published by gosee (gosee.de), the German PR office for photography , with sites for France (gosee.fr) and the US (gosee.us)
