The Rockaways III



On my continuing photo journey through The Rockaways (Queens, NY) I hooked up with my old friend and rap artist I.G.Off in Far Rockaway. We had worked together when German filmaker Harald Rumpf shot HIP HOP: A Tale From the Hood, a film about I.G. and his then rap partner Hazardous. This was 10 years ago. Meanwhile I.G. was run over by a drunk driver in 2007 and is paralyzed from the neck down. That has not slowed down his ambitions, he is rapping and recording and has tons of plans for the future. I'll keep you posted, an album is due soon. Meanwhile I.G. took me to his hangouts in Far Rockaway and introduced me to the neighborhood. We plan another visit this weekend ...

The Rockaways



My personal project this summer concentrates on The Rockaways in Queens, New York. At first reluctant, I am falling in love with the place. Yesterday was one of those very good days, when I ran into daredevil skateboarders Angel Andino (above) and Curtis Cooper (below) who practiced their skills at their local hangout, complete with skateboard ramps, grinding rails and quarter pipes. The light was right, and, unusual these days, it wasn't as hot as hell. Journalist Claudia Steinberg, who spends her summer weekends in her 'shag' in Rockaway, is writing ...
