Dancer Michaela DePrince for BRIGITTE magazine

Michaela DePrince grew up as an orphan in Sierra Leone during the brutal civil war. Inspired by a picture she found and kept as a child, she started training as a ballet dancer in the U.S. after being adopted by American parents. DePrince was one of the stars of the 2011 documentary film First Position, which followed six young dancers vying for a place in an elite ballet company or school, and she performed on the TV show Dancing with the Stars. In 2012, she graduated from the American Ballet Theatre's Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis school in New York, and joined the Dance Theatre of Harlem as a dancer. Her amazing story was written by journalist Ulrike von Buelow for German BRIGITTE magazine, published in the current issue. More images of Michaela here

A Farewell to Luise Kimme

My friend Luise Kimme moved on to another world in April. The German sculptor left an amazing amount of stunning art work for us to enjoy, most of it on view at her 'castle' in Tobago, itself a piece of art. I will miss her dearly. Over years we collaborated on many of her books and catalogues and her impact as an artist on my life was huge. She also opened my eyes for the rich culture of the nation of Trinidad & Tobago, which I visited dozens of times since 1986. My book MOKO JUMBIES: The Dancing Spirits of Trinidad only came to life because Luise Kimme introduced me to her many  friends in the islands. I am forever grateful.

Here is the article I wrote for the T&T Guardian, published last week:

ADAC Reisemagazin New York Subway Musicians

I had a great time on assignment for German travel magazine ADAC Reisemagazin this summer photographing New York's subway musicians. Many careers started underground and many musicians return to the subway platforms even when doing well above ground. Most love playing for the world's best audience, New Yorkers, who appreciate a brief break from their busy lifes by listening to world class talent in an unusual place. The story was written by Tobias Moorstedt.

ADAC Reisemagazin Rockaway

In it's current issue (10/2011) German travel magazine ADAC Reisemagazin used images from my series of Rockaway, Queens to illustrate a story by writer Claudia Steinberg about the old/new weekend destination for New Yorkers. Surfers included.

Nassau County

Nassau County (or as seen from Brooklyn: the first part of Long Island right behind Queens) is one of the richest counties in the US and not only the 37 golf courses show it. There are big boats, big mansions and big name stores, like the ones on a stretch of Northern Boulevard called The Americana Manhasset, where the parking lot looks like that of a luxury car dealership. And then there are those nondescript places that look like any other place in Long Island, or in the US. Nassau County is also very broke, for the second time in a decade. I guess their government can't handle all the money so the State took over. Anyway, whatever the reason, I had a great time driving around the county photographing for German DIE ZEIT (text and interviews by Heike Buchter), it sure is a beautiful part of Long Island and I hadn't really been there yet ...
