Machine Gun Show in Kentucky

This is not Afghanistan nor Iraq nor any other warzone. This is Kentucky. The insane bi-annual Knob Creek Machine Gun Show near Luisville is the largest of its kind in North America. At three shooting ranges weapons of all kinds are fired for three long days, especially high-powered automatic rifles and machine guns. Boats, cars, and whole voting booths are going up in flames (angry folks !) Children may also practice their shooting skills here, hm ... and a ‘Jungle Walk’ lets participants shoot metal targets hidden in the woods with an Uzi ... as if we did not have enough problems.

Moko Jumbie stock photo

One of the images from my book 'MOKO JUMBIES: The Dancing Spirits of Trinidad' was used on the cover of 'Theatre Survey volume 50 number 1', by the American Society for Theatre Research, published by The Cambridge University Press.

Green California in FOCUS

Two of my stock images were used this week by German FOCUS magazine to illustrate a story about California's green tourist attractions like the California Academy of Sciences (above) in San Francisco, built by architect Renzo Piano.

Cuba America in DER TAGESSPIEGEL

German daily 'DER TAGESSPIEGEL' recently used one of my stock images of a car driving by the cinema 'America' in old Havanna to illustrate the changing relationship between The United States and Cuba under the Obama administration.

I went through 'old' pictures recently and decided to publish them here once in a while under 'back then'; they are all images from the beginning of my professional photography career, which started (very slowly !!) in the early nineties. This series about the fabulous Drag Queens and Transvestites in New York Clubs started as an assignment from German Playboy magazine, which sent me out to shoot "Underground New York', and as it happens to me with many good stories, I got hooked and continued to shoot in Clubs like the old  Copacabana, Roxy and The Pyramid for weeks longer than I was getting paid for. Camp Hope in Le Monde

Earlier this year French newspaper Le Monde used one of my images of 'Camp Hope', a tent city that sprung up near Ontario, California, to illustrate a story about the growing homeless population in the US. Now that Oprah Winfrey has sent a camera team to such a camp in Sacramento, the American media is finally taking notice and stories about tent cities are all over the place.

Moko Jumbies in National Geographic Traveler

Two Moko Jumbies, stilt walkers of the Dragon Keylemanjahro School of Art & Culture in Trinidad, are gracing the last page of the Jan/Feb 2009 issue of the National Geographic Traveler magazine. It is their 7th annual photo issue.

Moko Jumbies Poster

The Conference on African and Afro-Caribbean Performance at the University in Berkeley, California, is long over (Sept. 26.-28.), but I just got the poster which used one of my Moko Jumbies (stilt dancers) images from Trinidad. Since the tradition of dancing on stilts came to Trinidad from West Africa, this was a perfect match for the topic of the conference. Look out for another Moko Jumbies image and their story in the Jan/Feb issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine, under 'Strange Planet'...

Havana Cars

I promised myself NOT to photograph cars and cigars while in Cuba last week, but I could not keep myself from snapping some pictures of these amazing old Buicks roaming the streets of Havana like huge ancient bugs. I had no idea that there are so many of them.



A friend told me that the color of a car simply depends on the color available at the time of the new paint job. You take what you get...

Moko Jumbies in The New York Times

One of my images of a Moko Jumbie was just published in The New York Times to illustrate a very positive review of artist Laura Anderson Barbata's current exhibition Jumbie Camp ! at the Galeria Ramis Barquet in Chelsea, where she introduces her fabulous costumes and designs, made for the Trinidadian stilt walking (Moko Jumbies) school 'Dragon' Keylemanjahro School of Arts & Culture, to the public. Workshops and a live performance are part of the program.
The image shows stilt walking student Ria Walters, member of the above mentioned school, performing in one of Laura's costumes during Carnival in Trinidad.

The photo was used by the artist to produce a lenticular which is on view at the gallery.
