Greensburg, Kansas

on assignment for SonntagsBlick: The town of Greensburg, Kansas, population once about 1400, was totally destroyed by a #5 tornado in 2007, eleven people lost their lives. Today Greensburg is the 'greenest' town in America, thanks to a recovery plan put up by the 800 people who stayed (and new ones who joined them) devoted to rebuild in sustainable fashion. A City resolution passed in December 2007 states that all City-owned buildings larger than 4,000 square feet will be built to LEED Platinum (the greenest green possible) specifications. Everything else in town which has been built sustainably is by choice.
